Rituals

Rituals
Rituals are a way for disciples to offer something to their god, generally with the intention of cashing that favor in for something else later. There functionally three types of rituals in Pyrite.
Celebration & Conversion Rituals
A Celebration and Conversion Ritual is put on by the cult to please their god. In the distant past, these rituals were also used to convert new followers, or so the gods say, and therefore a key part of the rituals is often to engage non-followers. These can range from a more traditional sacrifice (goat on the altar), to a party (celebration for the Fool), to an activity like playing tag (a ritual for The Hunter).

In Pyrite, C&C Rituals are effectively posts created by the players, for the players. The Cult that runs the ritual will be either asking their god for some specific reward, or just doing it for coins which can be spent at the Blessed Coffers. Participants will also be rewarded with either Copper Coins, or whatever the intended boon of ritual is (I.E. all who participate will receive some amount of healing).

Running a C&C Ritual is easy – OOCly, you can just do it. If you wish to do a fairly large event that requires coordination, feel free to use one of the plotting channels in discord, or even a journal post for organization but honestly 99% of them you should simply post to the community and then @everyone in the #links channel on discord.
C&C Ritual Guidelines:
  • If a Ritual is run with no specific ask behind it, the team running it will receive 1 Silver Coin (1 Per Team, not 1 Per Team Member), and every participant (from the god's team or not) will receive 2 Copper Coins.
  • If you are asking for something specific from the god, then remember that the bigger the ask, the bigger the Ritual needs to be.
    • Examples: Reviving the dead, a regen blessing, removing negative game effects, speeding up crop growth.
    • Healing/revivals/effect removal are very expensive.
      • 'Give back Tommy's arm' is going to be at least 'give up your own arm'. A pound of flesh plus interest.
      • However, the price CAN be shared by anyone participating in the ritual, and they do not all need to be disciples of the same god.
    • The more people the event is designed around the 'bigger' it is considered.
      • A four person tea party is worth less than a game-wide tea party designed with party-games and other activities.
    • Rituals can be co-run with other members of your cult or even across cults.
    • Rituals should relate to their god's preferences in some way.
      • This doesn't have to be exacting, but consider the IC justification. IE:
        • A party can be thrown for The Fool, but a party where you play pranks on people appeals to them more.
        • A party can be thrown for Jen, but a party where people tell mystery stories around a camp fire will appeal to her more.
        • A party can be thrown for The Merchant, but one where you make people pay for entry appeals to him more.
      • Most gods will accept some kind of blood sacrifice but the 'value' of it will vary.
How Does a C&C Ritual Work Exactly?
  1. The Cult or Disciple tells the god what they want to do for them (Gracillis tells the Fool they want to throw a carnival in their name but need some supplies to do so) and the god will provide limited supplies for the Ritual.
    • You can more or less get anything you need for a Ritual with the right persuasion to your god. (OOCly, you DO NOT need to play this out or ping the god contact for this, simply assume that the god will provide supplies unless you're asking for something like a nuclear reactor).
    • These supplies will vanish after the Ritual is complete.
    • If you want stuff that will last BEYOND the event, you will probably have to pay up some coins (i.e. your character wants to be able to give out lasting prizes) these would cost the same as whatever they would generally cost from the Coffers shop.
  2. Put up a post describing whatever is going on!
  3. Put the link in the '#links' channel in discord and ping @everyone
  4. Play and have fun, you can assume disciples receieve their reward either during or after the conclusion of the 'ritual', whichever works best for you.
Little Rituals
If a disciple just wants to get a Copper Coin or two, or otherwise make a sacrifice to their god off the cuff for any reason, this can be done ICly at any time with a smaller ritualistic gesture, such as:
  • Slaughtering an animal (or a person) and drawing the god's sigil in blood or offering up an ad hoc prayer out loud.
  • Placing a finished knife on the altar of the Hound.
  • Digging up someone's deep, uncomfortable secrets while touching Jen's brand.
  • Scaring the shit out of someone and then claiming it is a Blessing from the Fool.
  • Really any kind of deliberate invocation of the disciple's god directly connected to some action that would suit their tastes will do
These little rituals can be done at any time, and will generate a Copper Coin on the spot. However, no supplies are provided for them, and they don't benefit anyone but the ritual-doer.

Divine Rituals
Occasionally the gods or the god-proxies will run rituals as well. These are essentially a kind of minigame. These may not always reward a coin, sometimes there are specific boons that the gods will put forth as the reward. These divine rituals will be announced in both discord and the OOC community and there will only be one per OOC month maximum.

Remember! The purpose of Rituals are both to enable you to create posts that make fun for yourself and the community, while rewarding your effort and their participation. So while hitting up mods/god players OOCly to ask a couple of questions is fine, please veer toward posting and not worrying too much about it. And if you have input on how to make this mechanic smoother for players, we are very open to hearing it.
